Cycling in Winter
- Cycling is an all year round fun and enjoyable activity!
- At certain times of year extra care needs to be taken
- Devon County Council undertakes precautionary salting on major roads (about 20% of the network) when there is a risk of ice or snow.
- Make your own assessment on the conditions. This may result in deciding to avoid certain routes, or even choosing not to cycle that day!
- Ensure your bike is in good working order – check brakes and consider using different tyres
- Cycling soon gets you warm but make sure you are wearing suitable clothing to prevent getting cold and wet
- Brighten Up – use lights. Bright and reflective strips may make you more visible
- Be alert and more observant than normal
- Cycle at a sensible speed as it could be icy, wet and slippery
- Stopping distances become much longer
- Allow extra time for your journey
- Watch out for other road users-their visibility may be impaired by the conditions
- Traffic can be slow during adverse weather conditions and cycling is often quicker than other forms of transport
- Share considerately with all other uers
- HAVE A SAFE CYCLE AND ENJOY YOUR RIDE!
