Get Cycling

Get Started

Here are our top 10 ways to get yourself up and riding and enjoying the freedom of your city!

1. Make a pledge!
This is the first step in your commitment to more cycling – and it need only be a small step to begin with. Make your pledge here.

2. Get free cycle training
Whatever your age or ability, you can get free cycle training through Cycle Exeter – find out more here.

3. Find out the best routes for riding
Cycle Exeter is expanding the city’s network of cycle lanes and traffic-free cycle routes, and there are some amazing cycle trails on the outskirts of the city, ranging from effortless canalside ambles, to more adventurous woodland trails. Find out more here

4. Hire a bike
Hiring a bike for a day or weekend is a great way to start cycling (again), for little cost. Find your nearest bike hire shop here.

5. Join a cycle club
If you like to ride as part of a group, there are plenty of cycle clubs that organise weekly leisure rides. Ask in your local bike shop, or take a look at events in Exeter organised by the Cyclists’ Touring Club, the Exeter Wheelers, or the Exeter Mountain Bike Club.

6. Make friends with your local bike shop
Your local bike shop is a mine of information, not just about bikes, gear and accessories, but also about cycling activities in and around the city. Find your nearest bike shop here.

7. Take your bike to the shops
Why sit in a traffic jam and then have to pay to park your car? When you go shopping, take your bike – you’ll feel fit and ready to hit the high street, you can lock up your bike for free, and you can justify having a nice cup of tea and some cake to fuel your ride home!

8. Give your old bike a healthcheck
If your bike has been gathering dust in the shed, it’s a good idea to check that it’s safe and ready to ride again. Cycle Exeter can help you organise Dr Bike sessions at work for a free healthcheck – otherwise take it in to your local bike shop.

9. Sign up for cycling updates
Keep up with the latest developments in the Freedom of Your City campaign – sign up for email updates.

10. Get up to 50% off a new bike with Cyclescheme
Cyclescheme lets you buy a new bike and accessories, then pay for it in instalments by sacrificing a small part of your monthly salary. Best of all, you can save up to 50% on a new bike! If they haven’t already, your employer can easily sign up – it’s simple to administrate and it won’t cost them anything
