Bike hire
If you want to give yourself an introduction to cycling on a new bike, for little expense, why not hire one for a day or weekend?
Here’s a list of shops in and around Exeter where you can hire a bike.
Bike health
Bikes are simple to maintain in-between rides. Of course it’s important to take your bike in to your local bike shop for a full service when it needs one, but here are some basic tips to keep your bike running sweetly – and safely.
Wheels
They should spin straight, but if they wobble then they may be buckled – visit your bike shop.
Check for missing or broken spokes – they should be replaced as soon as possible.
Tyres
Check the pressure – it should be at least 30PSI. Check the wall of the tyres for recommended pressure.
Look at the tread on your tyres. If it’s worn down, you’ll need to replace them.
Brakes
If you have rim brakes, check the brake blocks for wear. Squeeze the brake lever – the blocks should ‘bite’ the rim squarely. Adjust or replace the blocks as necessary, or take to your local bike shop.
Stem
Stand over the front wheel while holding the brakes (and the top of the fork, if you have suspension forks) on and push backwards and forwards. If there is any movement in your stem (the connecting clamp between the frame and the handlebars), the bearings may be loose – visit your bike shop to have it checked out.
Handlebars
Hold the front wheel between your knees and try turning the handlebars – if the bars move without the wheel moving, your stem needs tightening with an allen key.
Frame
Look out for hairline cracks in the frame, especially where the tubes meet. Any cracks should be checked at your local bike shop immediately – certainly before you ride the bike again.
Chain
Clean and oil your chain regularly using a chain cleaner and oil – just ask your friendly local bike shop for the best stuff to use.
