Cycling tips for women

Get a bike that fits you
Most big bike brands offer frames designed specifically for women, from traditional step-over designs (that means you can ride a bike and still wear a long skirt or dress), to the most cutting-edge racing bikes and mountain bikes.

Don’t get saddle sore
Regular saddles can be a bit unforgiving on women’s bottoms, so why not get one that’s designed specifically for them? Many manufacturers offer women-specific saddles that have wider cushions to help you sit more comfortably. Ask in your local bike shop.

Cyclewear can be seriously chic
Skinny jeans, leggings, tights – they’re all perfect for cycling in. Even Topshop has got in on the action with a collection of on-trend cyclewear by Cyclodelic. Sustrans has launched a website just for women www.bikebelles.org.uk where you can check out some tips for looking good on two wheels.

Get free training
Cycle Exeter is offering free one-on-one cycle training to sharpen up your skills – download a booking form here pdf(364 bytes - pdf help).

There’s no need to get sweaty
Cycling hard doesn’t mean you have to sweat buckets. Get hold of a proper base layer or vest incorporating merino wool, and your perspiration will wick away from your skin.

Take all your stuff with you
Put a basket on your bike and you can easily carry your bag with you – your local bike shop should have a range of baskets, from traditional wicker to lightweight, foldable fabric carriers. Fit a rack over the back wheel of your bike and you can add panniers for serious load-carrying capacity.
