Introduction to the employers toolkit

Cycling is not only good for your staff but good for your business too.

You can help your employees make positive, beneficial changes to their lives and your business by supporting them to become regular cyclists.

With this toolkit, we’ll show you how to do this – and how other companies in Exeter have made this happen.

Why cycling is good for your business

Too often cycling is perceived as only for the super-fit and fanatical. But actually, having more people cycle to work delivers many tangible benefits to your business.

On time:
in the rush hour, a bicycle can be twice as fast as a car in the city centre. That means people who cycle in to work are less likely to be late.

On the ball:
cycling boosts the brain cells and makes employees happier, more alert and motivated at the start of each day. They’re likely to be more productive, and they’ll also work off any stress at the end of the day on their ride home.

Less sick leave:
regular cyclists can be as fit as someone ten years younger, and their immune systems will be stronger – which means a happier, healthier workforce, and one less likely to be off sick with minor colds and flu.

Better for your sustainability policy:
many businesses are taking sustainability into account when choosing suppliers. With more cycle commuters in your company, and by offering support for them, you can demonstrate how your business is greener and more sustainable. This is also a great thing to promote to the media – more information here.

It saves money:
employees who take their bikes rather than cars to meetings or to catch the train won’t have to claim back costs for parking or fuel, which means you’ll have fewer expenses to cover.
